In recent weeks, athletes and sport leagues around the country have been embroiled in controversy after athlete protests focusing on racial injustice were characterized as unpatriotic. These events remind us that sport as a social institution has the power to reflect the tenor of the time as well as serve as a platform to promote social change. In this program we seek to engage members of the Drexel community and beyond in a conversation about race and sport, exploring how these events are situated within a larger national dialogue, how we engage each other in thoughtful discussion, and what we can learn from each other moving forward.
The panelist will include one of the nation’s leading thinkers on this topic, Kevin Blackistone, known for his work on ESPN’s Around the Horn, Washington Post, NPR, and his teaching in the Medill School of Journalism at the University of Maryland; Ivan Soto, the Executive Director of the Arena Football League Players Association; and Patrick Hruby, Washington, DC-based writer, editor, and journalist who specializes in the intersection of sports and social issues.
