Is it possible that humans will\nnot be able to control the burgeoning intelligence of machines and\nthat we will\, fr ighteningly\, be subordinated to them\, especially as\nthey become self-aw are?\n\nThis talk starts by sketching out some past and present forecasts of\nwhen technological singularity will be real and present\; what social\ ,\neconomic\, and political issues will emerge\; what security issues will \nloom\; and finally\, how futurists (including science fiction writers\na nd the movies) have envisioned the role of human beings in the coming\nera of the thinking machine.\n\nWhile the future of humanity might be hanging in the balance\, one key\nacademic question arises. What should researche rs\, in particular\ninformation systems researchers\, study w/r/t AI? This overall issue\nhas been framed as IA versus AI\, or intelligence (human) augmentation\n(IA) versus artificial (computer) intelligence (AI). Endurin g research\nquestions might include: (1) technical issues with achieving\n singularity and requirements such as designing a tamper-proof\n“kill” switch for intelligent machines\; (2) behavioral questions\nsuch as the pa ce of change and problems with duplicating human\ncreativity\; (3) social- economic conundrums such what will people do in\nan era of omnipresent thi nking/working machines and worldwide societal\ndisruption\; and (4) organi zational matters such as will there be an\nIS/IT Dept. and\, if so\, what will it do if machines are themselves\ndesigning and coding new systems?\n DTSTART:20211012T150000Z DTEND:20211012T161500Z LOCATION:Gerri C.
