In some classes, attendance checks will use the location of each device to verify the student’s presence in the classroom. Because LeBow College of Business respects students’ privacy, a system called PinPoint has been put in place with the provisions listed below.
How and when attendance location is tracked:
- No additional app is required to be downloaded. The attendance system uses the device’s standard web browser.
- Students must give their web browser app and the attendance webpage permission to access the device’s location.
- Students will be able to see if their location was recorded successfully for each class period. If it was not recorded properly, they can contact their instructor and/or get technical support in order for their attendance to be tallied correctly.
Important: Failing to accurately report location may result in the loss of some or all attendance points for the student in that class.
What attendance location tracking cannot do:
- It cannot track a student’s location at any time other than when they are displaying the attendance check-in form. Once a student submits the web form or closes that web browser tab, their location is no longer being tracked.
- It cannot track a student’s location until they give it permission to do so. On some devices, students may be able to approve the web browser app and/or the attendance check-in page to always be allowed location access (so that they don’t need to approve it for subsequent visits), but that step is not necessary. If the web browser already has this pre-approved permission, students will not see that permission prompt.
- It is not intended to track a student’s location except in public classroom areas. Students should not be asked to sign in with their location for classes that do not meet in a Drexel classroom. If a class moves to remote synchronous for a day, some other form of attendance should be used.
