He was formerly Assistant General Counsel at the IMF, responsible for the IMF’s legal relations in finance and economic surveillance with each of its then 187 member countries, including Republic of Congo. At the IMF, he advised on all sovereign debt and bank restructuring, including Argentina, Greece, Grenada, Jamaica, Iraq, Latvia, Liberia, Seychelles and Uruguay.

Subsequently, as the only senior IMF lawyer in private practice, he has continued to advise on the most high-profile sovereign debt restructuring matters, including Argentina, Ukraine, Mozambique and Sudan. Dr. Laryea is active in sovereign debt fora, including the Institute of International Finance’s Committee of Sovereign Risk Management and the Principles Consultative Group.
