The proposed 76ers Philadelphia sports arena has been very controversial among many constituents and stakeholders. The Center City location drew protests citywide and into City Hall as City Council voted to allow the East Center City location to go forward, followed by an abrupt turn around on January 12, 2025 leaving some supporters feeling used and duped. There is confusion as to what will happen now to Center City East, especially in the wake of the announcement of the closing of the iconic Macy’s located in the historically protected Wanamaker building. Panelists will provide insight into the pros and cons of urban sports stadiums, using historical experience in other cities such as New York, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta and Phoenix. Economic and equity impacts neighborhoods, citizens, businesses, employers, sports fans, city revenue etc. will be discussed to hopefully craft a positive way forward for all.
Panelists include David Oh, consultant and attorney, and three time Phila City Council member, Joanna Kan, CPA, Blue Story Collectors and Chapter Advisor of Ascend Greater Phila, Richard Smith, Pres., R. A. Smtih Group and Chairperson of Philly Vote, LLC, Joel Maxcy, Prof and DH of Sports Mgt, LeBow and Devon Givens, sports host, AllCity Network.
