David Becher, Ph.D., says he was surprised by the government’s decision to move to block a merger between American Airlines and US Airways, because they don’t have that much overlap. “The Justice Department, however, is looking at anti-competitive concerns using a broader measure than just route overlap. Apparently, USAir’s CEO has made a number of statements in e-mails concerning the ability of the combined carrier to alter pricing and other issues.”
